What is SPECIMEN ?

Specimen is a SAMPLE of a stamp made by the issuing country, originally printed in very small quantities for the approval of Postal Authorities (also PLATE PROOFS) and perhaps to distribute to members of the Universal Postal Union and inform them of the official existence of the stamp in question. They were made in many cases by OVERPRINTING the basic stamp with SPECIMEN or MUESTRA (Spanish) or MIHON (Japanese), sometimes adding a punch hole. Sometimes only a punch hole was used. Different countries used many other different ways of producing Specimens such as with black bars or semi-circles printed over the value, blue diagonal hand-made bars on the back, etc. Although early Specimens were issued in very small quantities for the approval of Postal Authorities and are consequently scarce, in more recent times some Postal Authorities have tolerated the issuing of a somewhat larger quantity of Specimens.
