What is GUTTER ?
Large sheets were mechanically cut into panes, usually 4, which were then distributed to postal offices for sale to the public. The 4 panes were separated by blank spaces or labels called gutters. When the sheet is cut to form panes, these blank spaces become the stamp margins for each individual pane. However, sheets can sometimes be obtained before they are cut into panes and the blank space between 2 printed stamps becomes a “gutter”. A cross gutter is the intersection of the 4 panes at the center of the sheet. Gutter pairs and cross gutter blocks of 4 are sought after by specialist collectors.
