What is a stamp TOPIC (THEME)?Let us say for example that you collect BUTTERFLIES. You may decide to collect only those stamps which show a Butterfly as a CENTRAL THEME. But in many cases, a set of stamps is issued, one of which has a Butterfly as a central theme, but has 15 other stamps that do not. Most stamp dealers will not break up a set just to sell you the stamp which shows the Butterfly. Then there are stamps in which your topic is only part of the design, sometimes minor, very minor or even stylized. Sometimes your topic is not even on the stamp but in the margin (selvedge) of the stamp, Miniature Sheet or Souvenir Sheet. The topic may even be implied, such as scenery showing Elephant Bay (for the Elephant topicalist) or Cat´s Cradle Game (for the Cat or Game topicalist). Not to mention more specialized aspects of topical collecting such as covers, first day covers, postal stationery, cachets, cancels and other postal markings.
